FAQ

Can I use my own domain name with Jimdo?

Yes! Jimdo provides both free and paid accounts. All paid accounts allow users to either register a new domain (included in the price), or connect a domain that is registered elsewhere.

When will my client be able to register or connect the domain?

Your client will be able to register and/or connect an existing domain after accepting transfer of the website through 99designs.

How do I transfer the website to my client?

Your client will need to press the Accept Website button on the Files tab of their contest page on 99designs. At that point, your client will receive an email with instructions on how to create a password and register and/or connect an existing domain.

Is Jimdo compatible with WordPress?

No.  Jimdo is an all-in-one website building and hosting solution. All websites built with Jimdo can only be hosted on Jimdo's servers.  You cannot move the designs over to a WordPress installation or another hosting solution.

If I know how to write code, can I make a website from scratch?

The Jimdo system does allow anyone who knows how to write HTML and CSS to write their own custom template; however these templates won't have the full access of styling features. Websites with custom templates still use the existing Jimdo elements to add all the content. With that said, it's important to note that some code will break when the website is transferred from yourself to your client, and any files that are uploaded to the Files tab of the Custom Template section are not transferred, so if you choose to write your own code, please contact us before your client accepts the website.

If I know how to write code, can I modify the existing Jimdo templates with CSS or add custom HTML and JavaScript?

Yes, you can modify Jimdo templates with custom CSS and JavaScript in the Edit Head section, and you can add HTML to the body of the page with the Widget/HTML Element. With that said, it's important to note that some code will break when the website is transferred from yourself to your client, so if you choose to write your own code, please contact us before your client accepts the website.

What is included in a Jimdo paid subscription?

Free websites on Jimdo are fully-featured and very robust. They have everything one needs to create a beautiful website or simple online store. The JimdoPro subscription will remove the small Jimdo ad from the footer of your website and allow you to use a proper domain name that does not include "jimdo.com." The annual price includes hosting for the year, a domain name registration, access to the web editor, and faster support. JimdoBusiness increases the ecommerce functionality and provides the fastest support.

How can I or my clients get support for using Jimdo?

Many questions can be found by searching in the Jimdo Support Center. Jimdo also offers email support for all subscription levels, including free.

Red Flags in contests

If you see requests from customers for any of these features, it is a sign that Jimdo, and the L&W contests, may not be the right solution for them. You should contact 99designs support immediately unless the CH decides that the feature is not important:

  • The Jimdo system has no User accounts, Visitor accounts, or Logins for website visitors

  • The Jimdo system has no Registration, unless they just need email newsletter signup - that can be done using www.mailchimp.com

  • The Jimdo system cannot allow customers sell online in multiple currencies (Stripe and PayPal will automatically convert, but Jimdo’s store can’t use Euros on some pages and USD on others)

  • There is no way to sell digital goods using Jimdo's store (although you can use Gumroad, a third-party widget to embed digital goods for sale on a Jimdo website, it just won't use the Jimdo shopping cart/payment system)

  • Stores that need to sell several hundred products or more should not use Jimdo

  • There is no access to backend databases or full FTP access with Jimdo

  • Jimdo websites cannot be hosted on other systems

  • Publication-level blogging (newspapers, magazines, several posts per day) isn’t recommended on Jimdo. Those people should be using WordPress.
